How to Care for Wool & Alpaca (Without Fear of Felting)
Wool and alpaca are natural fibers — in fact, they’re hair! Just like your own hair, they don’t need constant washing. Most of my pieces are outerwear, so they won’t get dirty often. Instead, refresh them by laying them in the sun for a few hours — it naturally deodorizes and recharges the fibers.
When it does come time for a wash, remember this one golden rule:
Keep the water temperature steady.
It’s not about avoiding hot or cold water — it’s about avoiding sudden changes. A quick shock from hot to cold (or cold to hot) will agitate the fibers, causing them to lock together (felt). If you maintain the same temperature, your wool or alpaca will stay soft and beautiful.
My favorite method:
- Take your garment into the shower with you. Wash gently with shampoo.
- Rinse in water that matches the wash temperature (hot stays hot, cool stays cool).
- Press out water — never wring or twist.
- Lay flat on a towel, cover with another towel, and press or gently stomp to remove more water.
- Reshape and dry flat, away from direct heat or sun.
Extra tips:
- Spot clean small messes with a damp cloth instead of washing the whole garment.
- Store folded, not hung, to keep shape.
- Use cedar, lavender, or airtight bags to deter moths.
- Less washing = longer life.
